  3. landing in Red Square. Found guilty of
  4. `malicious hooliganism', he was imprisoned
  5. until 1988. His exploit, carefully timed to
  6. take place on the USSR's `national border
  7. guards' day', highlighted serious
  8. deficiencies in the Soviet air-defence system
  9. and led to the dismissal of the defence
  10. minister. Rust, despite pleading that his
  11. actions had been designed to promote world
  12. peace, was sentenced to four years'
  13. imprisonment by the Soviet authorities. After
  14. serving 14 months in a KGB prison in
  15. Lefortovo, he was released and sent home as a
  16. humanitarian gesture by the Gorbachev
  17. administration.
